Description
Listen to our podcast with artist Mark Podwal here.
Artist Mark Podwal describes Kaddish for Dąbrowa Białostocka as “a visual diary of my journey to Dąbrowa,” the shtetl in northeastern Poland where his mother was born. Podwal’s series of imaginative, colorful drawings and paintings combine Jewish religious iconography and ritual objects with images from Yiddish folk culture and Polish tradition. With acrylic and colored pencil, Podwal creates unexpected views of a vanished world. According to Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, “Such is the power of this artist: he captures what death has forgotten to take.”
