Description

Reveals how contemporary art contributes to the culture of remembrance.

In 1991, the town of Pulheim initiated the Stommeln Synagogue art project, a permanent process of examining and reexamining this historically significant location, one of the few German synagogues to survive World War II. Since then the project has continued to contribute to a culture of remembrance. Far from the day-to-day business of culture, international artists have repeatedly taken up the challenge of developing works for the silent building in a remote setting and its remarkable history. Virtually all the works were specially designed for the location, both its architecture and context. This volume assembles a wide-ranging overview of remarkable works to mark the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the project.

The Synagoge Stommeln in Pulheim is one of the few synagogues in Germany that was not destroyed during the pogroms of 1938 and did not fall victim to the wave of demolitions that took place after the war.
